My inspiration was the hazy view driving home from Westmorland on a hot summer afternoon. Come to think of it, all summer afternoons in Imperial County are hot. There were few vehicles on the road, and I was taken in by the expanse of the desert - and the even vaster, cloudless dome above and the subtle changes in hue through its depth.

The inscription along the lower edge and through the land portion of the painting reads: The road may lead/past the farms/through the desert/into the mountains/but it is always under the sky.
